How to start a car with dead battery

We have all been in the situation of wanting to start a car with a dead battery . Maybe we left the lights on, maybe it’s a cold winter morning, or maybe we haven’t used the car for a long time. If you find yourself in this situation, calling insurance to send a tow truck can be time-consuming, so if you want a quick and easy fix, you’ll need to learn how to start a car with pliers. Don’t have any handy? Don’t worry, we offer you an alternative.

HOW TO START A CAR WITH CALIPERS

Having a good set of pliers on hand can save you from trouble. Once you have a family member, neighbor or other driver next to you to help you restart the car with an auxiliary battery , you just have to follow the following steps:

1 Check that the batteries of both cars have the same voltage .

2 Connect the clamp of the red cable to the positive terminal of the flat battery.

3 Connect the other end of the red cable to the charged battery .

4 Follow the same procedure with the black wire. Connect the clamp to the negative terminal of the discharged battery, then to the negative terminal of the charged battery.

5 Start the car that has a charged battery and wait between two and three minutes to start the vehicle without a battery .

6 Disconnect the clamps in the reverse order of how they were attached. Disconnect the black cable from the newly charged battery and then the other end. So, disconnect the red wire from your car first, then disconnect the other end of the wire connected to the auxiliary battery.

ALTERNATIVE: STARTING THE MACHINE ON A SLOPE

If you are lucky to have parked downhill , you can take advantage of this situation to start the car with a flat battery. Turn on the ignition with the key and make sure you have turned off the lights, radio or air conditioning. Then:

1 Press the clutch

2 Engage first, second or third gear

3 Release the parking brake

If your vehicle is parked on a level surface, you can follow the same procedure if you find someone to push the car together with. Regardless of which way you use to start the car, consult the mechanic as soon as possible to check the condition of the battery .
