….dismisses reports of no physical infrastructure seven months after kick-off, cites planning, engineering design and procurement processes

The management of the Omi Eko Project has defended the pace of implementation of the Lagos State waterways transportation modernisation initiative, dismissing reports that no physical infrastructure has been delivered seven months after the project’s kick-off.
In a press statement, the project management described the report circulating on an online news platform as misleading, arguing that it failed to recognise the extensive preparatory processes required to deliver a major infrastructure project of such scale and complexity.

According to the management, the project is being implemented in line with global best practices for infrastructure development, which require a phased approach encompassing planning and procurement, design, infrastructure development, implementation and evaluation.

It explained that these stages are essential to ensuring that the project is technically sound, financially responsible, environmentally sustainable and capable of delivering its intended benefits.

The management maintained that the absence of visible physical structures at the early stages of implementation should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of a lack of progress.

It noted that major infrastructure projects typically require extensive technical assessments, detailed engineering designs, procurement procedures and stakeholder engagement before large-scale construction activities can commence.

The Omi Eko Project is designed to modernise Lagos State’s waterways transportation system, with the broader objective of establishing a safer, more efficient and environmentally sustainable transport network for residents.

The project is expected to play a role in improving the state’s water transport infrastructure as Lagos continues to explore alternative transportation options to address the mobility needs of its growing population.
However, the management’s response did not provide specific details of completed preparatory milestones, a breakdown of work undertaken since the project’s kick-off, or a timeline for the commencement of major physical construction activities.
The project team urged members of the public and media practitioners to verify information through official channels before publishing reports that could misrepresent the implementation process.
It reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and the successful delivery of the project, stressing the importance of adhering to the technical and administrative requirements associated with major infrastructure development.
The Omi Eko Project remains a significant initiative in Lagos State’s efforts to develop its waterways as part of a broader strategy to improve transportation efficiency and promote environmental sustainability.
As attention shifts to the project’s implementation, the availability of verifiable progress updates, including completed preparatory activities, procurement milestones and construction timelines, will be important in enabling the public to assess its progress.
