NADDC renews push motorcycle, tricycle local components part manufacturing

The need to ignite and encourage automotive local components manufacturing occupied the front burner on Friday, February 19 during a stakeholders conference in Lagos.
The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has unveiled plans to slash selected imported motorcycle and tricycle components, fueling a bold push for local production.
Speaking at a Lagos stakeholders’ meeting on February 19, 2026, Director-General Otunba Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin described the move as a decisive step to strengthen domestic manufacturing, reduce import dependency, and accelerate the full passage of the National Automotive Industry Development Plan (NAIDP) into law.
In his submission, “Before recommending deletion, we must ensure components can be produced locally in sufficient quantity and quality. This is about building a resilient Nigerian automotive industry and embedding the NAIDP into enforceable law,”.
The initiative has drawn strong backing from the Bank of Industry (BOI) and industry bodies, including MOMAN, NAMA, and MAN. Leaders emphasized that the programme can only succeed if the NAIDP is formally enacted, creating a legal framework that guarantees support for local manufacturers.
Industry stakeholders hailed the programme as a game-changer for local content, jobs, and industrial growth, provided the right environment is created to make local production competitive.
If implemented effectively and anchored in law, the Import Deletion Programme could transform Nigeria’s automotive value chain, reduce import dependence, and spark a new era of industrialization.
