Nigeria’s quest to recalibrate the automotive sector took another dimension recently when Otunba Joseph Osanipin, Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) led the agency’s delegation on a strategic mission to Japan.

The trip was  one that has brought  the country’s automotive sector closer to delivering Nigeria’s first modern End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV)  ecosystem.

The delegation’s engagements began with a technical visit to Kaiho Industry Co. Ltd., a globally recognized leader in ELV recycling. The team provided deep insights into Japan’s internationally certified recycling frameworks, dismantling processes, advanced material recovery systems and environmentally responsible waste treatment practices.

The NADDC team also held impactful discussions with UNIDO–ITPO Japan, where the the director general presented Nigeria’s newly adopted ELV and Automotive Waste Recycling Regulations (2024).

The NADDC boss said he was peased that, the framework was highly commended, as it strengthens global confidence in Nigeria’s direction and opens new doors for partnerships with JICA, technology providers and Japanese investors seeking sustainable industrial opportunities.

To further consolidate diplomatic support, the NADDC team visited the Nigerian Embassy in Tokyo, where the team briefed the Chargé d’Affaires, Mrs. Folashade Shobande, on the mission’s objectives and the investment potential within Nigeria’s automotive ecosystem.

The Embassy expressed strong readiness to continue facilitating investor engagement and industry collaboration.

Finally, it was a rewarding experience to meet with the Nigerian community leader, Mr Emeka in Japan, where we discussed on the ELV Regulations and our broader initiatives in automotive development.

Their support is vital in ensuring that only vehicles meeting international standards are sent to Nigeria

This mission marks a major step forward in our commitment to building a cleaner, safer and economically robust automotive industry—one that drives job creation, strengthens our circular economy and positions Nigeria for global competitiveness.
